Lash Lifting Step by Step: A Professional's Guide

Lash Lifting Step by Step: A Professional's Guide

A professional lash lift follows a clear sequence: consultation and lash assessment, preparation, shield selection and lash placement, lifting, neutralising, finishing and system-specific aftercare. The exact application method and processing times must always come from the professional lash lift system being used.

This guide explains the treatment workflow and the decisions a trained lash technician makes at each stage. It is not a substitute for accredited training or the current instructions supplied with your chosen system.

What Is a Lash Lift?

A lash lift is a professional treatment that reshapes the natural eyelashes into a lifted position. By changing the direction of the existing lashes, the treatment can make more of their natural length visible and create a more open, defined appearance without adding extensions.

Results commonly remain visible for around 6–8 weeks as the treated lashes move through their natural growth cycle, although individual results vary.

Before You Start: Choose the Lash Lift System

The first important step happens before product is applied: identify the exact system you are using and work to that system's protocol.

London Brow offers two distinct professional approaches:

  • London Speed-Lift — our professional Speed-Lift system with its own defined application method and processing times.
  • London LashFixx — our cysteamine-based professional lash lift system with its own treatment protocol.

Do not combine timings or application instructions from different systems.

Lash Lifting Step by Step: Professional Treatment Framework

Step 1: Consultation and Lash Assessment

Complete the required client consultation and assess the natural lashes before treatment. Consider the condition, thickness and suitability of the lashes together with relevant treatment history and the contraindications for the system you are using.

Complete patch testing in accordance with the current product instructions and your professional treatment protocol. If the lashes are damaged, excessively weakened or otherwise unsuitable, do not treat simply by shortening the processing time.

Step 2: Cleanse and Prepare the Eye Area

Remove makeup, oil and product residue from the lashes and surrounding treatment area using suitable professional preparation products. Correct preparation helps create a clean working surface for accurate lash placement and product application.

Isolate the lower lashes appropriately and ensure the eye area is ready for the chosen treatment method.

Step 3: Select the Correct Shield or Rod

Shield selection influences the finished lift. Consider the client's natural lash length, eye shape, growth direction and desired result rather than choosing a shield size from lash length alone.

Position the shield according to your professional training and the technique being used.

Step 4: Position the Natural Lashes

Lift and separate the lashes onto the shield using the adhesive, glueless technique or positioning method appropriate to your chosen system. Aim for clean separation and controlled direction without crossed or tangled lashes.

Accurate lash placement matters because the position created at this stage influences the finished result.

Step 5: Apply the Lifting Step

Apply Step 1 exactly as instructed for your professional lash lift system. Product placement, quantity, processing range and whether occlusion is used are all system-specific.

For London Speed-Lift, Step 1 has a defined processing range of 5–12 minutes according to lash thickness. Do not exceed the system instructions or transfer this timing to LashFixx or another lash lift product.

See the London Speed-Lift instructions for the complete application protocol.

Step 6: Apply the Neutralising Step

Remove Step 1 and apply the neutralising step according to the instructions for the system being used. Correct neutralisation is an essential part of setting the lashes into their new position.

For London Speed-Lift, Step 2 is processed for 5 minutes. LashFixx follows its own professional instructions and should not be given Speed-Lift timings.

Step 7: Tint Only Where Appropriate

If lash tinting forms part of the service, use a product suitable for professional lash tinting and follow the tint manufacturer's instructions, including its application method, processing guidance, contraindications and patch-testing requirements.

Do not use a universal 5–10 minute tint rule: tint formulations differ.

Step 8: Complete the Finishing Step

Complete the treatment using the finishing or conditioning stage specified by the lash lift system. For London Speed-Lift, Step 3 is processed for 5 minutes.

Remove the lashes from the shield and complete the treatment according to the system instructions and your professional training.

Step 9: Give the Correct Aftercare

Aftercare must match the lash lift system used. Avoid giving every client the same generic 24–48 hour rules without checking the manufacturer's guidance.

Clients should handle the lashes gently and follow the specific advice given by their trained technician. Where suitable, a conditioning product such as Keratin Brow & Lash Boost Serum can form part of ongoing lash care.

London Speed-Lift Timings at a Glance

  • Step 1: 5–12 minutes according to lash thickness.
  • Step 2: 5 minutes.
  • Step 3: 5 minutes.

These timings are for London Speed-Lift only. For more detail on why timings should not be generalised across systems, read our lash lift processing times guide.

Common Lash Lift Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing systems: using timings or techniques from one formulation with another.
  • Poor assessment: treating lashes that are not suitable for another chemical service.
  • Incorrect shield selection: choosing solely by a generic size chart rather than assessing the client's lashes and desired result.
  • Poor lash placement: allowing lashes to cross, twist or sit in an uncontrolled direction.
  • Ignoring the manufacturer's timings: extending processing because lashes appear resistant or shortening it using unofficial rules.
  • Incorrect product placement: applying professional chemical products outside the placement specified by the system.
  • Generic aftercare: giving advice copied from another system rather than the treatment actually performed.

Do You Need Professional Training to Perform a Lash Lift?

Yes. Lash lifting uses professional chemical products around the eye area and requires knowledge of consultation, contraindications, lash assessment, product placement, processing and safe treatment technique.

London Brow offers professional lash training for technicians who want to develop or update their skills.

Lash Lift Step-by-Step FAQs

What are the main steps of a professional lash lift?

The overall workflow is consultation and assessment, cleansing and preparation, shield selection, lash positioning, lifting, neutralising, optional tinting where appropriate, finishing and aftercare. Exact product application and processing instructions depend on the system used.

How long do you process a lash lift?

There is no universal lash lift processing time. London Speed-Lift Step 1 is 5–12 minutes according to lash thickness, with Steps 2 and 3 processed for 5 minutes. Other systems, including London LashFixx, must follow their own instructions.

Should you always use cling film during a lash lift?

No universal rule should be applied. Use occlusion only where it forms part of the instructions and technique for the lash lift system you are using.

Can you tint lashes during a lash lift treatment?

Tinting can form part of a professional lash service where appropriate. Follow the instructions, contraindications and processing guidance for the specific tint product rather than applying a generic tint timing.

Can you use the same technique for Speed-Lift and LashFixx?

No. They are different professional systems. Follow the application and processing instructions supplied for the system being used.

How long do lash lift results last?

Around 6–8 weeks is a useful general guide, although the visible result varies with the client's natural lash cycle, lash characteristics and other individual factors.
