Epic Evolution of the Eyebrow - thick to thin and everything in between - The London Brow Company

Brows Through the Ages: Eyebrow Trends from the 1920s to Today

Brows Through the Ages

From plucking the life out of our brows to laminating them into perfect, glossy arches, eyebrow trends have truly come full circle. Over the decades, brows have been long and thin, soft and natural, bold and bushy – and everything in between.

Fashion, film, music and pop culture have all shaped how we wear our brows, and each era has left its own unmistakable mark. Here’s a look at how eyebrows have evolved from the 1920s to today.

1920s

Defined, rounded and ultra-thin. Brows were delicately shaped with a soft downward sweep at the tail, creating a wistful, dramatic expression inspired by silent film stars.

1930s

Even thinner and often completely drawn on. High arches became the signature look, giving brows a sharp, sculpted appearance that reflected the era’s bold, powerful femininity.

1940s

A return to a more natural style. Brows became fuller with a clear shape, softening the face while still maintaining structure and elegance.

1950s

The rise of the glamorous brow. Naturally groomed but bolder, with squared fronts, darker tones and a strong, lifted arch for a sultry, polished look.

1960s

Two extremes dominated this decade: either thick, untouched natural brows or ultra-thin, pencilled arches. There was no in-between.

1970s

Disco glam took over. Brows were plucked thin and high, shifting attention to dramatic mascara and shimmering eyeshadow.

1980s

The era of bold and bushy. Brows were worn full, fluffy and unapologetically natural – the ultimate “woke up like this” look. Tweezers were officially out of fashion.

1990s – Early 2000s

The infamous pencil-thin brow made a comeback. Over-plucked, heavily drawn-on arches dominated this period, leaving many people still trying to recover their natural shape.

2010s – Today

Brows are finally treated with the respect they deserve. The focus is now on enhancing natural growth rather than erasing it. Techniques like brow lamination, tinting and mapping create fuller, lifted brows that frame the face without harsh lines.

Modern brows are about balance – polished but not overdone, structured yet natural.

Rejuvenate any brows back to influencer status and let your natural shape do the talking.
