Not getting the skin stain you were expecting with Hybrid Dye?
You’re not alone. Here are the top five reasons it might not be working and how to get better, longer-lasting results with every client.
The Skin Wasn’t Prepped Properly
Oils, makeup, micellar water residue… they all create a barrier between the dye and the skin.
Fix it:
-
Cleanse the area with a brow-safe cleanser or shampoo
-
Exfoliate gently before application to remove dead skin
-
Avoid micellar water—it often leaves a film that repels stain
You Didn’t Press the Dye Into the Skin
Brushing it on won’t cut it. The skin needs contact and pressure for the stain to transfer.
Fix it:
-
Use a flat or angled brush
-
Press (don’t just swipe) the dye into the skin
-
Focus on sparse areas where more stain is needed
The Timing Was Off
Removing too soon or leaving it too long can both cause patchy or poor staining.
Fix it:
-
Follow the recommended time per shade
-
Lighter shades = less time | Darker shades = up to 15 mins
-
Keep checking the stain during processing
You Didn’t Use the Correct Developer
Using another brand’s developer or mixing ratios can completely change the result.
Fix it:
-
Stick to the correct ratio (usually 1:1)
-
Mix fresh for each treatment, don’t pre-mix and store
Skin Type or Environment Affects Retention
Oily skin, high humidity, and sweating can all affect how long the stain holds.
Fix it:
-
Adjust your client’s expectations for very oily skin
-
Provide proper aftercare instructions
-
Recommend a top-up sooner for those with shorter stain retention
🧡 Leigh’s Pro Tip
Sometimes it’s not your technique - it’s the prep. Spend a few extra minutes setting the skin up properly and you’ll see a huge difference in results.
