Can Hot Weather Affect My Brow Lamination?

The short answer is Yes!

Brow Lamination is definitely affected depending on the weather.

Brow lamination is a perm and perms are affected with heat.  There are a few things you need to be aware of as a Therapist doing this treatment in the Summer and what your clients need to know when having Brow Lamination in the heat.

Perming solutions have a chemical in them called Thioglycolic Acid, this is the active product in lamination formulas which softens the brow hair so you can reposition them into their new shape.

Heat will speed up this process.  This is why in normal situations we use 'cling film' or 'plastic /saran wrap' when doing our laminations to ensure the product is working effectively especially in the Winter time when the temperatures can make perming times take longer.

However in the Summer time your room temperature and your clients body temperature will be higher than normal especially in heat waves.  This is when you need to be extra careful with your perming lotion and in some cases leave the cling wrap off the brows in step 1 and only use cling wrap in step 2.

If you still want to use cling wrap in step 1 in hot weather then make sure you reduce your perming times.

What you need to ensure your clients are aware of:-

Client aftercare in the summer time or during heat waves will need to be stricter than normal.  Sweating, excess heat and humidity post lamination will affect the lamination results and how long a lamination lasts.

Perm dropping (where the clients shape drops down) is more common in the hot weather as sweating and humidity can make the brows heavier and less likely to retain their fluffy shape in the first 48 hours.

How can clients prevent this?

Explain to your clients how heat can affect their brows and advise them to keep themselves out of the sun and in cooler areas during the first 24 - 48 hours.  If your clients feel their brows are dropping they will need to brush them back up and into shape while the rebonding period is taking place.  Give your clients their own mascara spoolie to take home so they can do this rebrushing up if they need to.

Clients who are having lamination done before a holiday will need to have them done at least 3 days before they want to jump in the pool or lay in the sunshine.  If the bonds have not reformed in time these factors will affect how long their lamination lasts.

Also remind your clients that having sunshine or heat on the brows after a lamination can cause irritation or burns as the skin is more sensitive after a lamination and wax so they will need to keep their brows shaded for the first 48 hours post treatment.

This does sound like a lot to worry about in the summer but most of it is common sense.  Just keep the brows dry, cool and out of the sunshine for the first 48 hours to allow them to 'set' into place.
