Patch testing isn't just a formality - it's a must.
Whether you’re tinting with Hybrid Dye, using Henna, or doing a full lamination, patch testing protects your clients, your reputation, and your business.
Why Is Patch Testing So Important?
-
Legal Requirement: In the UK and many other countries, patch testing is required before tinting or chemical brow treatments.
-
Insurance Validity: Most beauty insurance providers will only cover you if a patch test has been carried out within the correct time frame.
-
Client Safety: Reactions can develop over time - even if your client has been fine before.
What Needs a Patch Test?
-
Hybrid Dye – Patch test at least 24–48 hours prior
-
Henna Brow Colour – Same time frame applies
-
Brow Lamination – Patch test for both Step 1 and Step 2, especially for new clients
-
Lash Lift + Tint Combo – Always patch test both systems
How Often Should You Re-Patch Test?
You should re-patch test if:
-
It's been more than 6 months since the last treatment
-
The client has changed medications
-
They’ve had Covid or a major health event
-
You’ve switched products or formulas
How to Patch Test Correctly
-
Clean the area (usually on the inside of the arm)
-
Apply a small amount of product (both Hybrid Dye and Developer mixed)
-
Leave on for 15 mins, then remove
-
Observe for 24–48 hours
Always record results on your client consultation form.
Pro Tip:
Use a patch testing reminder system in your salon software or booking app so you never miss one and keep records in case of claims.
